His life is turned upside down by the appearance of his exact double, who plots against him and gradually usurps his position at work and at home, ultimately driving him to the brink of collapse. Perhaps the most striking and surprising aspect for Mr. Golyadkin is that those around him, especially his boss and his servant Petrushka, seem unfazed by the double&#8217;s appearance, treating him simply as a lookalike.<\/p>\n<p>Dostoevsky&#8217;s extensive use of internal monologue in this novel allowed him to delve into the depths of his protagonist&#8217;s character and explore the psyche altered by the arrival of this double, thus cementing his genius in analyzing the human psyche. Nietzsche famously said of him, &#8220;Dostoevsky is the only writer from whom I have learned anything about psychology.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Although &#8220;The Double&#8221; is not among Dostoevsky&#8217;s most famous works, it is considered a cornerstone of his unique style.
