He has also made a habit of keeping a daily journal\u2014recording even the simplest details\u2014since he was a young student, and has written reflections and short stories, some of which were published in Kuwaiti magazines during his time practicing medicine there. The author stated: “I have always been\u2014and remain\u2014proud of my profession as a physician, orthopedic surgeon, and university professor. However, I realize that my deep immersion in medicine came at the expense of literary writing. Today, I am finally emerging from that state and daring to publish writings that have sat in my desk drawers for years.”
\nAbdel-Majid noted that he wrote this collection of short stories in the 1990s, yet they remained unpublished until now. He also mentioned completing a full-length novel years ago that is still awaiting publication, expressing hope that it will soon see the light of day.
\nThe author explained that his passion for literature rivals his passion for medicine; however, his success in the medical field\u2014however modestly he might view it\u2014may have contributed to his neglect of publishing his literary work. He remarked: “I know this is no excuse; many physicians have become renowned literary figures\u2014from Yusuf Idris and Anton Chekhov to my friend Dr. Ziad Al-Zoubi, who recently released two successful books despite having delayed their publication, just as I did.”
\nHe added: “Better late than never.” Abdel-Majid notes that every story in this collection holds a piece of his soul, stating, “I treat patients with medicine, but writing is what heals me.” He adds, “My stories are the pulse of my soul; even if they appear to be works of fiction, behind each one lies a spark of reality\u2014an idea or a scene\u2014that left its mark on me. For instance, the story ‘The Hidden Dish Restaurant’ was born from a phrase my late father used to say: ‘If you choose to be a sanitation worker, you must be the best sanitation worker in the country.'”
\nHe explains that the story “Grown-ups Don’t Understand Children” was inspired by his experience practicing orthopedic surgery, while “Eid Eve” stemmed from a real-life incident that deeply moved him and ignited his imagination.
