Description
The scene on the Nile bridge transformed into a strange brawl. The sun had completely disappeared into the earth to the west, hidden behind the treetops beyond the Nile. Darkness descended upon the black mud houses of Kafr El-Tin, heavy as a final breath. The men gathered on the bridge became like night ghosts emerging from the depths of the Nile. Fathia’s white, naked body, her robe torn to shreds, resembled that of a Nile fairy emerging from the water in the dead of night. Her face was pale and white, her eyes wide and filled with a determination bordering on madness, or perhaps madness bordering on determination. Her body, despite its softness and feminine curves, had become like that of a night fairy—strong, terrifying, and frenzied. She struck the men with her feet, knees, thighs, shoulders, and arms, which were wrapped around her breast where the child lay.
