Description
These “contemporary readings” of fundamental aspects of our philosophical heritage were undertaken by a prominent Moroccan thinker, contributing to the ongoing effort within contemporary Arab thought to establish a suitable approach to engaging with our heritage.
Although these readings were conducted independently, meaning there was no overarching framework uniting them all, they stem from a single methodology and a unified vision, the framework of which the author outlines in the book’s introduction. This makes them, in effect, a single reading—a reading that transcends mere research or study. It goes beyond documentary research and analytical analysis, proposing an interpretation that imbues the text with meaning, making it significant within its intellectual, social, and political context, and also for us, the contemporary readers. This reading attempts to make the text relevant to us in terms of understanding and rationality. Making the text relevant to itself means separating it from us, while making it relevant to us means connecting it to us. These readings, therefore, rely on separation and connection as two key methodological steps. This is precisely where their essential merit and novelty lie.
