Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd Allah al-Baghdadi al-Dimashqi

Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd Allah al-Baghdadi al-Dimashqi was a 19th-century Muslim scholar, jurist, and man of letters. He was known for his expertise in Islamic religious sciences, literature, and poetry, as well as his command of both the Arabic and Turkish languages. He served as an imam in the Ottoman Navy; in 1865, while traveling aboard an Ottoman vessel, circumstances led him to Brazil. He resided there for approximately three years, during which he encountered various Muslim communities, documented their religious and social conditions and customs, and described the cities and cultures he observed. He chronicled his experiences in a work that now serves as an important source for the study of the history of Muslims in Brazil and 19th-century Arabic travel literature.
