Abdullah II bin Al Hussein Al Hashemi (born 1962) has been King of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan since 1999. He succeeded his father, King Hussein bin Talal, after his death, and was enthroned as King on June 9 of the same year, a day known as the Accession to the Throne Day. He served as Crown Prince twice: the first from his birth until April 1, 1965, and the second from January 24, 1999, to February 7, 1999.
He was born in Amman as the first son of King Hussein bin Talal and his second wife, Princess Muna Al Hussein, of British origin. Therefore, he was the heir apparent to the throne and Crown Prince from birth—as stipulated by the Jordanian constitution—until King Hussein transferred the position to his younger brother, Prince Hassan bin Talal, in 1965, due to the circumstances surrounding Jordan at the time. Abdullah began his education in Amman and completed it abroad. It is noteworthy that he holds a master’s degree in foreign relations from Georgetown University, and also studied at Oxford University.
