Fatima Mernissi (September 27, 1940 – November 30, 2015) was a Moroccan writer and sociologist who focused on women’s issues. Her books have been translated into several international languages.
Her writings focus on Islam and women, analyzing the evolution of Islamic thought and modern developments. In parallel with her writing, she led a civil society struggle for equality and women’s rights, founding the Civil Caravans and the “Women, Families, Children” group. In May 2003, she shared the Prince of Asturias Award for Literature with Susan Sontag.
