Michael Wolff (born August 27, 1953, in Paterson, New Jersey, USA) is an American author and journalist. He is a recipient of two prestigious journalism honors: the National Magazine Award and the Mirror Award. He is a regular contributor to several publications, most notably *USA Today*, *The Hollywood Reporter*, and the British edition of *GQ*. He also served as an editor at *Adweek* and was a co-founder of the news aggregator website Newser.
On January 5, 2018, Wolff published his book *Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House*. The work is based on two hundred interviews with White House officials—including Jared Kushner (President Trump’s son-in-law), former advisors, and others. Even before its official release on January 5, 2018, the book’s digital editions topped the bestseller lists on Amazon and the Apple iBooks Store.
The book sparked widespread controversy prior to its release, as U.S. President Donald Trump attempted to legally block its publication. The text contains explosive and chaotic accounts regarding the behavior of the President and his team—including their unexpected shock following his election victory, and the alarm felt by his campaign staff upon learning of his win. It also features disparaging and embarrassing remarks about the President’s family, attributed to Steve Bannon, the former White House chief strategist. However, Trump’s lawyer lost the case, prompting the book’s publisher to capitalize on the resulting media frenzy by accelerating its release in the U.S. market. A particularly aggressive tweet from President Trump led to the publication date being moved up by four days—from the original Tuesday, January 9, to Friday, January 5.
