Rasul Gamzatov (Avar: KhӀаmzatil Rasul) (September 8, 1923 – November 3, 2003) was a Dagestani poet. He was born in the village of Tsada, Khunzakh District, Dagestan, Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, Soviet Union. He was the son of the famous Dagestani poet Hamza Tsadasa, named after his village, Tsada. His father named him Rasul, after the Prophet Muhammad.
Gamzatov died on November 3, 2003, in Moscow, after spending most of his life in the Dagestani capital, Makhachkala.
One of his poems, “The Storks,” became a popular song in the Soviet Union.
