Robert Venturi (Robert Charles Venturi) is one of the most renowned architects, born on June 25, 1925, in the United States. He is the originator of the famous phrase “less is a bore”—a direct counterpoint to architect Mies van der Rohe’s maxim, “less is more,” which advocates for simplicity in all aspects, including construction materials.
In 1966, Robert Venturi wrote: “I like complexity and contradiction in architecture. I do not like inconsistency, randomness, inefficiency, or merely picturesque, expressive complexity. I favor an architecture of complexity and contradiction that draws upon the richness and ambiguity of modern experience—including the experience of art… I prefer a vibrant, messy vitality over obvious, routine compositions. I value richness over clarity of meaning… ‘More’ is not equal to ‘less’.”
