Taha Baqir

Taha Baqir Nasir (1912 – February 28, 1984) was an Iraqi archaeologist, author, cuneiform scholar, linguist, historian, and former curator of the National Museum of Iraq. Baqir is considered one of Iraq’s most prominent archaeologists. Among his notable achievements are his translation of the Epic of Gilgamesh from Akkadian into Arabic, the deciphering of Babylonian mathematical tablets, the discovery of the Eshnunna Code, and his excavations of ancient Babylonian and Sumerian sites, including the ancient Sumerian city of Shadubum in Baghdad. Baqir was fluent in the four historical languages ​​of Iraq (Arabic, Aramaic, Akkadian, and Sumerian), as well as English, French, and German.
