Tawfiq al-Hakim

Tawfiq al-Hakim (October 9, 1898 – July 26, 1987) was an Egyptian writer and playwright, a pioneer of the Arabic novel and play, and a prominent figure in the history of modern Arabic literature. The way his artistic works were received by the Arab literary scene—sometimes considered a great success, other times a major failure—had the greatest impact on shaping the unique influence of his literature and thought on successive generations of writers. His famous play, *The People of the Cave*, written in 1933, was a significant event in Arabic drama, marking the beginning of a theatrical movement known as *Intellectual Theater*. Despite his prolific output, Tawfiq al-Hakim wrote only a few plays suitable for stage performance. Most of his plays were written to be read, allowing the reader to discover a world of allusions and symbols that can be easily applied to reality, contributing to a profound and insightful critical vision of life and society.
