Description
The novel revolves around a hunchbacked boy named Quasimodo, an ugly foundling raised by the priest of Notre Dame Cathedral, Dom Claude Frollo, who trains him to be the cathedral’s bell ringer. The great writer Victor Hugo successfully created a character with fantastical traits, blending an ugly exterior with kind inner qualities.
In late medieval Paris, Quasimodo is chosen to be the leader of the jesters at an annual festival called the Feast of Fools. This is against his master’s wishes, as he wants Quasimodo to spend the rest of his life in the cathedral, hidden from public view because of his appearance and to avoid frightening people. The gypsy girl Esmeralda is a prominent figure at the Feast of Fools, captivating the crowd with her dancing and enticing pursuers, including Frollo. Dom Frollo fails to win her over, so he tries to possess her through violence and rape. He is the son of a gypsy family who came to Notre Dame with the intention of stealing, but Frollo catches them, and they escape, leaving Quasimodo behind.
Enter the depths of medieval Paris and discover the tragic lives of Quasimodo, the ugly bell ringer of Notre Dame Cathedral; Claude Frollo, the tormented archdeacon; Esmeralda, the beautiful gypsy dancer; and Phoebus, the handsome captain who deceives Esmeralda with feigned love. You will be captivated by this gripping and heartbreaking tale of betrayal, love, hope, and redemption.
