A unique book in its subject matter and style, Naguib Mahfouz concluded his creative journey by writing texts depicting fragments and specters of his dreams during his convalescence following his stabbing by extremists, adding to them his own imaginary and symbolic dreams. Convalescent Dreams has been translated into French and English, and its English translator, Raymond Stock, stated that the dreams carry more than just autobiographical echoes of Mahfouz’s biography. The eminent psychiatrist Yahya al-Rakhawi also addressed them in his book “On the Nature of Dreams and Creativity,” analyzing these texts psychologically and commenting on them from a psychological and humanistic perspective.
