Description
On October 25th, as if there had been no secret agreement, the issue of the Suez Canal was brought before the United Nations Security Council. After four consecutive days of debate, the Council unanimously adopted six principles as a prelude to a settlement.
A round table meeting was held in Geneva on October 29th. After the conference concluded, Dag Hammarskjöld, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, approached Dr. Fawzi, the Egyptian Foreign Minister, and whispered in his ear: “It’s fortunate that the train has passed the station after the military train of aggression prepared by the British against you has arrived…” Hammarskjöld was mistaken.
