Description

In the preceding pages, I recounted some things from my childhood, including its hardships, under the title “And Now I Remember,” meaning that the memories date back to a very distant time. I chose the title “Things from My Childhood Memories.”

And in this childhood, then adolescence, through youth and into manhood, there were other things, no less significant than the hardships that preceded them, that have marked my entire life. In the will I published, which resonated globally, I stated that I am destined for hardship, that I have witnessed this hardship since the day I was born, and that within this hardship, I fought it and triumphed over it. I add that my life, dedicated to the poor, the wretched, and the tormented of the earth, is a gift I have given my body to, a body worn down by long prisons and equally long exiles, until I reached the age where the body weakens, or as the verse says, “And among them are those who are brought back to the most decrepit stage of life.” I am but a man, and because I have been brought back to the most wretched stage of life, I continue writing with the pen, now that my body is incapacitated.

Therefore, I wish—or rather, my readers wish, as they have written to me many times, and I hide nothing from them—that I add my current state to my past, for history is a continuous chain, and man is a product of his social history. And because my history, in these wretched times, is no less wretched than what has passed, I continue, with a measure of honesty and fidelity, to recount the hardships I endure, now that my hair has turned white and my back is bent… in pages that appear separate, but are, in truth, connected. My readers see me in them now, just as I was before!
