About three hundred years ago, the people of England rose up and fought their king: Charles I, and in the end they won a great battle at “Naseby” and imprisoned him and formed a new government. The novel talks about one of King Charles I’s friends who died fighting bravely at Naseby, a colonel named “Beverley” who lived in “Ar Nod”, he died and she was very sad and fell ill until she died, Beverley had four children, Edward, Humphrey, Alice and Edith. Thus the four children were left without anyone to take care of them, except for a servant and an old man named “Jacob Armitage” who felt that it was his duty to replace both father and mother for the four children, so he was keen to protect them from the soldiers, enemies of the king, who intended to burn down their small house in the forest.. Will old Jacob be able to protect them, especially since the soldiers have begun to spread corruption in the country and have killed the king’s friends at Naseby, and imprisoned others, so England has become an undesirable place under such circumstances.
