Description
The novel recounts the events and details of the Ottoman era at the moment of its collapse, as well as the reverberations of the perilous transformation on the eve of World War I. The protagonists are Jamal Pasha and his Jewish lover, Sarah, surrounded by boorish men, spies, adventurous officers, and aimless soldiers, all striving to push the Arabs, who live with the bitterness of nostalgia for the past, out of their land, their history, and their era.
