Description
She longed to be free.
And she had been free several times. She would go to the fields on the street between the gardens. Each time she returned, her aunt would greet her with a slipper. Sometimes, her aunt’s husband would be the one to greet her. At first, she would cry, scream, and plead for help as she was slapped and beaten with the slipper. Then she began to defend herself, shouting back, blocking the blows with her arms, and arguing with her aunt and uncle. One day, she shouted at them, “I am free! I’ll do what I want! What happened has nothing to do with me!”
Her uncle’s hand silenced her with a slap across the lips. Her aunt retorted, “Free?! Free to do whatever you want, you ill-mannered brat!” When she calmed down, she repeated sarcastically, “I am free! I am free!” Then her tears flowed again. Was she truly free? Would she ever be free to do as she pleased? When would she leave this house? And where to?…
