This novel begins with a crime. But the narrator, a patient at a psychiatric hospital in a Beirut suburb, doesn’t stick to one story. His many forgetfulness betrays him, and his memories become confused. Did he kidnap and torture, or did he kidnap the woman he killed on a pile of stones? Or is he perhaps the victim of this woman who left her family—in the enemy territory—and followed him, feigning love? … The ultimate expression of love in the twists and turns of passion between a man and a woman, from murder to the depths of hatred, and even to the ultimate desire, where death reigns. This novel is considered a landmark in the history of Arabic narrative.
