Description

This book is the eighteenth installment in the “Incomplete Works” series, which comprises writings by the author that have not been previously published in her books. It is also part of a collection of conversations and interviews between her and fellow writers, which have been previously published as: “The Tribe Interrogates the Murdered Woman,” “The Sea Judges a Fish,” “Loitering Inside a Wound,” “A Trial of Love,” and “The Girl Will Come to Reproach You.” “This Syrian writer and poet was able to sail, through individual efforts, in a boat she built herself, amidst seas of turbulent waves, storms, and tempests. She traveled like Sinbad, conquered different foreign cultures, and was translated into more than one living language. She was celebrated not only as an extraordinary ambassador of Arab women’s literature, but also as a representative of modern Arab literature for both men and women. Ghada al-Samman undoubtedly possesses many qualities that earned her that high position in the world of literary creativity, but her most important quality – in my view – is her ability to renew and develop her literary talent over the years.” She is a committed writer, yet unaffiliated; a responsible writer, yet independent. Ghada al-Samman is a bird soaring alone, outside any flock, and her literature doesn’t fit the saying “a flower from every garden,” for it is a lush, shady forest, yet barren of trees.
