Description
This novel, belonging to the genre of prison literature, expresses Abdul Rahman Munif’s portrayal of the tense political situation experienced by the peoples of the Arab world, a situation that claims the lives of the nation’s youth, eager for freedom. It continues Munif’s exploration of prisons in the Arab world, following his novel “East of the Mediterranean,” published 15 years prior. It’s as if he’s suggesting that the passage of time in this part of the world has no bearing on the relationship between authority and citizens. As in “East of the Mediterranean,” the place and time are not defined but rather blurred, as Munif invents two states (Amouria and Moran), which serve as reflections of the reality experienced by the peoples of the Arab world in general.
