It might be argued that every human culture adopts its own system of ethics, viewing the ethics of others with a degree of suspicion and disdain.

Therefore, before exploring what has been lost of Arab ethics, we must first understand the foundation upon which this exploration is based. In other words, we must define ethics before we can identify what has been lost.

To establish a framework for this discussion, I will attempt a comparison between the ethics of nomadic and settled societies. My motivation for this is that Arab society, unlike many others, is unique in its deep connection to nomadic life on the one hand, and its status as the cradle of some of history’s most ancient civilizations on the other.
