Description

The Spy, a novel by Brazilian author Paulo Coelho, was published in 2016.

The novel revolves around the personal life of one of the world’s most famous women, the Dutch spy Mata Hari during World War I. The book opens with a letter written by Mata in 1917, a week before her execution in Paris for espionage during the war.

Coelho drew on numerous French archival materials released over the past twenty years. He stated that “Mata was one of those women who defied male expectations and managed to live an unconventional life.”

Mata Hari, the stage name of Margaretha Greci, is considered the most famous spy in modern history. A dancer for upper-class men, she was executed by the French by firing squad for spying for Germany during World War I.

Harry became a rich source of material for writers, historians, and filmmakers, earning her the title of “spy of spies.” She was portrayed as a beautiful and captivating woman who charmed and seduced powerful politicians.
