Description

A suitcase, a traveler on waves, cast ashore, its fragments hinting at the bitterness of separation. Ghada al-Samman departs and writes about that departure with a profound sense of humanity, and with the conviction that all the world’s treasures cannot buy that lifeline one plants in their homeland. In her travels, the author never relinquishes her Arab identity, seeing things through Arab eyes. In her sense of belonging, Ghada appears free from any inferiority complex: she doesn’t flaunt her fascination with anything; she explores cities and civilizations beyond the Tigris.

In her descriptive writings about her observations, which fall under the genre of travel literature, Ghada al-Samman adds an intellectual dimension to the descriptive aspect of this genre. Exile placed Ghada before her responsibility as a committed writer, and the longing for her homeland transformed journalistic writing into a creative endeavor. This collection of articles was originally published in the following two magazines: Al-Usbu’ al-Arabi (The Arab Week) and Al-Hawadith (The Events) magazine. This book is the second in Ghada al-Samman’s Incomplete Works series.
