Description
In this novel, part of his encyclopedic series of historical and mystical narratives, the author takes us on a new spiritual journey to Baghdad during the third century AH/ninth century CE, following al-Junayd al-Baghdadi and the community of the People of Insight. We witness the rise of a vibrant Arab-Islamic civilization on the ruins of two declining civilizations: Persia and Byzantium. We closely examine the foundations of linguistic sciences, as well as the schools of jurisprudence, theology, and philosophy. We also follow with fascination the trial of Ibn Hanbal in the Mihna (the Inquisition) concerning the createdness of the Quran, and the trial of Samnun al-Muhibb and his companions in the case of divine love. The circumstances surrounding the eventual trial, crucifixion, and execution of al-Hallaj become clear.
We follow the protagonist through all stages of his life as he establishes a mystical and civilizational framework based on love, knowledge, and altruism, in a world governed by diverse intellectual currents and various political conspiracies.
