Al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf, a figure whose fame spread far and wide, became synonymous with ruthlessness. His actions and deeds are still remembered by history. Through this story, Jurji Zaydan attempts to chronicle the most significant events in al-Hajjaj’s life, including the siege of Mecca during the reign of Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr, its conquest, and his assassination, which led to the caliphate of Abd al-Malik ibn Ali Marwan. Zaydan vividly portrays scenes from Mecca and Medina through his narrative.
