Through this story, Jurji Zaydan attempts to chronicle the most significant events in al-Hajjaj’s life, including the siege of Mecca during the reign of Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr, its conquest, and his assassination, which led to the caliphate of Abd al-Malik ibn Ali Marwan.
