Description
A book by Moroccan thinker Fatima Mernissi addresses the tense relationship between Islam and democracy in the Arab world. This tension stems from the deep fears generated by the conflation of the two concepts. The book argues that these fears stem from a sense of shock at modernity, which is viewed as an alien Western product, as well as a fear of individualism and freedom of expression, and the fear of political regimes that modern values might threaten their existence.
