In this book, author Dr. Youssef Zeidan discusses the Sufi thought of Abd al-Karim al-Jili and the points of agreement and disagreement between him and the great Sufis. The book begins with the first chapter on Abd al-Karim al-Jili, reviewing his life, name, title, birth, upbringing, personality, teachers, contemporaries, style, and writings. The second chapter, titled “The Perfect Man,” discusses al-Jili’s concept of the perfect man, the ranks of those who have attained spiritual knowledge, the rank of the perfect man, his relationship with God and creation, and the concept of the perfect man in al-Jili’s thought and in Sufism. Here, he discusses the views of Ibn Arabi, al-Suhrawardi, and Ibn Sab’in, and then examines the origins and sources of the theory of the perfect man. The third chapter addresses the issues of unity, incarnation, and union in al-Jili’s thought and in the thought of the great Sufis.
