Description
The novel explores the struggle of Armenians, men and women, in the specific region of Kessab. This struggle was part of a larger whole, as the Armenian fighters in Kessab closely linked their fight to expel the French occupation from Syria and Lebanon with their struggle for an independent Armenia. Jawad, the protagonist, was assigned by the party organization in Latakia to work in Kessab and its surrounding area. He led the organization’s struggle under extremely difficult circumstances. Despite using multiple aliases, Jawad was an Arab from Latakia. After the French withdrawal from Syria and the grand celebrations in Kessab, he announces, at the end of the novel, his decision to return to Latakia. His beloved, Yeranik, the novel’s heroine, chose to travel to Armenia over her love for Jawad, whose decision left him stunned.
