Description

The Naked Heart… A Lover is a chronicle of sorrow, for nothing is more agonizing for a lover than to have their beloved die before them. Thus, Ghada al-Samman records her grief over the passing of her beloved husband, Bashir al-Daouq. She summons Bashir al-Daouq through poetry and words bursting from the depths of her being, writing in the language of love and death together, a language of sorrow awakened by the shock of death, a shock unmatched by any other. Nothing is more agonizing for a lover than to have their beloved die before them, especially when the lover is Ghada al-Samman and the beloved is Bashir al-Daouq. They spent a long life together in overwhelming happiness, raising a cultured young man who aspired to be both mother and father in his heart. Whoever reads this book will read the wound of a heart, feelings overflowing with intense longing, and the haunting rhythm of absence. Indeed, the tragedy for the artist is that they feel more deeply than others, and are afflicted by sorrow far more than most.
