Description
This novel takes place in Louise, or the neighborhood of disgraced politicians, an upscale area in Brussels, the capital of the European Union. Since the 1950s and 60s, it has been a haven for disgraced politicians—those ousted by military coups, popular revolutions, or armed uprisings, which often occur in the Third World. They come to live in Louise, where specialized companies transport the money they steal from their countries and bring it to them, allowing them to live lavishly.
After the Arab Spring, Louise became a refuge for deposed Arab politicians and ministers. Private companies smuggled their stolen money and transported it to them in this beautiful city. Among them was an Arab minister who stole a million dollars from the state treasury on the day he fled. He encountered two young refugees who tried to trick him into giving them the million dollars to distribute to refugees in Syria and Iraq, transforming them from refugees into heroes. Will their scheme succeed? A satirical novel, brimming with events and paradoxes, featuring witty characters navigating a precarious landscape. There’s Jalal, the intellectual who associates with the Russian mafia; George, nicknamed “The Professor,” who quotes Marx at every turn; and the ousted minister who shifts political allegiances only to return to his country as a minister once more.
