Description
This story is a biting satire of the Russian bureaucracy during the Great Reforms of Alexander II. At that time, a new generation of idealistic men emerged, sincerely advocating for liberal reforms. However, Dostoevsky, in this story, portrays with biting irony the comical inner turmoil of such men, revealing the lack of resolve among the bureaucrats of this new system. Dostoevsky uses the high-ranking civil servant, General Bralinsky, as a prime example.
