Yasir ibn Amir said to his brothers Malik and Al-Harith: “Return, if you wish, to the land of Yemen, or travel, if you wish, to the vast land. As for me, I will remain. I have found this land pleasing to me, and I would not compare it to any other. I have been satisfied with this home, and I seek no alternative to it. I will not leave a land where I have found security after fear, strength after weakness, and spaciousness after distress.” His brother Malik said: “Rather, say, ‘I will not leave a land where there is this black girl who has no control over her own affairs, but who has control over everything of yours.'” Yasser said: “Think of me as you will, but I will remain. I will not leave this land, and I will not move from this home.”
Al-Harith said: “Away with you, a young man who prefers exile to being close to home, and Mudar over Qahtan, and Quraysh over ‘Ans. Woe to you!” You are not safe from being treated with contempt and forced to do what you hate. Then you seek help but do not find it, and you seek support but are only answered by those who will abandon you and support you.
Malik said: This black girl of yours did not emerge from the land of Mecca nor did she descend from its sky, but was brought to it as one of the slaves brought to it. If you wish, you will find others like her in every house you stay in. If you wish, we will occupy it for you until we kidnap her and you live with her in security among your father’s sons and those who are close to you.
Yasir said: Put this matter however you wish; For I am staying, I will not leave this land, nor will I move from this house. I will not repay Abu Hudhayfah for his good deeds with evil, nor for his good deeds with evil, nor will I deprive him of anything from his wealth, for he is the one who has sheltered us, made us his friends, and provided us with a good stay. Return, if you wish, to the land of Yemen, and travel, if you wish, in the vast land. As for me, I am staying, and I see nothing but my status in this house.
Al-Harith said: The status of a slave who is not forced into slavery, but rather strives for it and persists in it with utmost persistence!4 If the people are kind to you and prefer you with good, then it is the status of an ally who is supported but not supported.
Yasir said: Return, if you wish, for I am staying.
Al-Harith said to his brother Malik: Leave him, for I have known him to be nothing but a troublemaker with no good in him.
