Description

The novel explores a pivotal moment in Arab history: the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the subsequent British occupation of the territories it once ruled.

Author Ali Bader chose to begin the story before the outbreak of World War I in 1914. Through his protagonist, Munib Effendi, a man enamored with all things European, he chronicles the transformations of Iraqi and Arab society, particularly after the Turks began to leave Baghdad, to be replaced by the British. Bader seamlessly shifts the narrative’s focus between Istanbul and Baghdad during this period.
