Description
How often I called out in my sleepless days and nights: “O Mother, come and touch my leg and heal me.” The snow groans, and the ravens croak from its depths. Between my bed, soaked to the bottom with rain, and your grave, rivers roar and seas rage to their depths, shaken by storms. Did the wind not carry to you, through the stillness of the night, the cries of your two granddaughters from hunger and your starving grandson? We have starved, and in silence we have borne hunger and deprivation. Our secret is revealed by children weeping in anguish. Is there hunger in the homeland that sheltered you? What sorrows torment the eyes of the dead?
“Al-Sayyab wrote at least ten poems that are among the most beautiful Arabic poems written from the 1950s to the present day. This is enough for him to endure. This is enough for me to love him.”
