Description
Al-Ghazali says, “The heart is either illuminated or darkened, and none will be saved except he who comes to God with a sound heart.”
But what is a sound heart? How can one attain it? And what is the relationship between Sufism and a sound heart?
Some think that Sufism means isolation and asceticism. But Sufism offers a path that teaches us how to live well in this world and among people, and how to care for our hearts during our journey in this life, keeping them sound, healthy, and fit to meet the King of Kings in the Hereafter. Therefore, this book does not call for isolation or abandoning the world, nor does it advocate adopting a specific Sufi path. Rather, this book is my attempt to write about my story with al-Ghazali and my year-by-year companionship with him. This book is a journey into the depths of the heart, an attempt to reform it so that it may shine and not be darkened, so that it may know and not be ignorant, so that it may live and not die. With Abu Hamid al-Ghazali, we will come to know ourselves better and learn about the afflictions and diseases of the heart and the ways to cure them. Al-Ghazali, with his compassion, speaks of himself, encouraging us to rise as he did. Come with me in the company of Abu Hamid al-Ghazali… and what a wonderful companionship it is!
