Description

From afar, we see things more clearly. Thus, the characters in this novel understand Syria and Damascus better while in Berlin than they ever did while inside Syria. Anas Khaznaji, a young documentary filmmaker, harbors a deep secret. Nour Najjar, his assistant, seems to know more than she should. Anas Al-Ghanem, a psychiatrist, is driven by the search for the “truth behind the secret,” leading him to reconsider everything. These three characters belong to a specific social class in Damascus, but their journey between Damascus and Berlin allows them to rediscover all of Syria. For years, Syria dominated the news. This novel isn’t about the news itself, but about what lies behind it, what happens between the lines, the reasons that made it so prominent, and about the people who are just like us—not just numbers in news reports.
