Description
For four decades, between 1969 and 2012, Mevlut worked a variety of jobs on the streets of Istanbul, from selling yogurt and cooked rice to guarding a parking lot. He observed people of all shapes and sizes as they passed by, witnessed the city’s destruction and reconstruction, and saw Anatolian migrants build their fortunes. At the same time, he witnessed every pivotal moment in the city’s history, from political conflicts to military coups that shaped the country. Mevlut constantly wondered what distinguished him from others, the source of the strangeness that resided within him, yet he never stopped selling ice cream on winter nights and trying to understand who his beloved was.
What matters more in love: what we desire, or what fate holds for us? Do our choices dictate our happiness or unhappiness, or are all these things determined by forces greater than ourselves? The novel “A Strangeness in My Mind” attempts to answer these questions, portraying the tension between urban life and family life, and the anger and helplessness of women within their homes.
