The novel “A Blue Dove in the Clouds” by the Syrian novelist Hanna Mina is composed of 26 chapters. It tells the story of a sick girl named Rana and her father, who takes her to London for treatment. Rana suffers from a tumor in her spinal cord, and in London, they are unable to treat her due to its extensive spread. The story revolves around the father’s struggle to hide the truth from his daughter—the fact that she is ill. The events unfold in a London hospital: Jihad meets a woman and her sick husband, and then Jihad meets Lydia and her mother, who is battling cancer. The story concludes with Jihad’s return to his homeland, Syria. The truth about the illness remains hidden from the girl, only revealed to her family, until Rana’s death.
