Hemingway’s style is characterized by extreme simplicity. A short sentence, simple in structure, is almost exclusively a depiction of tangible reality and visual movement. Dialogue also plays a fundamental role in conveying the atmosphere surrounding the fictional or fictional character. He allows the character to present himself through his movements, apparent emotions, and the words he utters. Here, the reader’s role in creating the image the author intended to portray becomes clear. He participates in creating this character alongside its original creator: the author. Hemingway was a lover of bullfighting and its champions. He devoted many years of his literary career to writing “Death in the Afternoon,” in which he analyzed bullfighting in Spain and abroad. At the end of this book, he devoted dozens of pages to explaining bullfighting terminology in Spanish for the average reader, explaining their meanings in great detail and providing a detailed glossary. Therefore, no translator, no matter how experienced in the field of translation, could translate Hemingway’s novels or illustrated short stories about bullfighting without referring to this encyclopedia in this field.
The first story in this collection is his best and most famous, the story of an East African hunting trip, which provides the author with a critical examination of human cowardice. Fourteen stories from this collection were published in 1933, the last of which is “Fathers and Sons,” in which Hemingway depicts physical love in a manner that rivals D.H. Lawrence.
