Ahmed Effendi Akef is forced to abandon his education and work as a civil servant after his father is fired from his job. The family is forced to move from the Sakakini neighborhood to Khan El-Khalili due to the increasing air raids during World War II. There, Ahmed, a man in his forties, falls in love with his sixteen-year-old neighbor, Nawal. Meanwhile, his brother Rushdi returns from Assiut and reciprocates his love for Nawal, while Ahmed hides his feelings and frustrations.
