“Oh Dagestan! You too had your diverse teachers, you had the likes of Hass and Munchausen…. Once upon a time, only the sheikh could read a letter or a book in the entire village. Now everyone reads books except the sheikh…. The small people had a great destiny, and the story of Dagestan is still being written. It has no end, and it will never end. I would be happy if I found in this golden and immortal book a page whose author I am. I sing my song, so accept it, O Dagestan. Everything the people have given me, we will share with honor. My medals and decorations, I will hang on your arms. I will be grand hymns for you, and my words are poetry, but they are mine only. The cloak of the forests and the adornment of the snow-crowned peaks. We are finished. The time has come to part. And as it is, we will meet again, if God wills.”
