Description

The divergence in vision and content within this novel gives rise to the ambiguity enveloping it; such divergence inevitably leads to variations in structure and style from one narrative to the next. The novel relies heavily on symbolism, presenting a stark contradiction between a traditional heritage—embodied by Sheikh Murad—and the quest of a mind seeking absolute perfection.
As the author writes: “Beneath the mimosa trees, Sheikh Murad concluded the journey of his fasting body—a journey that had taken him from the *Kina* trees to the fig trees. To his mind—adorned with golden arabesques and the feverish, wandering patterns of interpretation—it became clear that the very mode of thought championed by legions of doom-mongering factions was, in fact, a truncated form of heresy.”
Perhaps these “eight leagues” represent the distance separating Dilshad from his ultimate goal: deciphering the components of the copied manuscript—*The Compendium on Calculating the Unknown*—inscribed in ink made from peach-wood soot and sand-frog blood. Here, the rebellious Dilshad remains bound by his roots yet yearns for his final resting place; he is a man consumed by inner turmoil and clashing visions (though the cold thwarted his planned siege on the “Citadel of Riddles”—as described in the pallid prose of Sayyid Jirjis Saluhi—forcing his retreat).
