This is the story of David Copperfield, a boy whose father died six months before he was born. He lived his early years happily with his mother Carla and their beloved housekeeper Peggotty for years, and was the center of their love. One day his stepfather, Edward Murdstone, whom David had never seen before, came to visit them and was very cruel. Now David and his mother were at the mercy of Mr. Murdstone, who used to punish him. Once, while scolding him for not studying, David bit his hand and told him that he did not love him, which made the stepfather lock him in his room for 5 days, and then sent him to Salem House Boarding School; where he was treated harshly by the headmaster Mr. Crackle and his assistant (and vice-headmaster). The only benefit David gained from going to school was that he made friends with Tommy Traddles and James Steerforth. Due to Murdstone’s cruelty, his mother and her newborn died. After the funeral, Murdstone decided to send David to London to work in his warehouse, and he lived with Wilkins and Emma Micawber. The Micawbers provided the young boy with some relief from the misery he faced during his stay there. David remembered that his mother had talked about his aunt who lived near Dover, so one day he decided to go to see his aunt, so he walked from London to his aunt’s cottage in Dover.
