I did not arbitrarily choose the text originally titled “The Creed of a Savoyard Priest” for translation into Arabic. This choice is subject to a critical plan I have mentioned on several occasions. I have previously stated that Western thought only came close to understanding Islamic thought once, in the mid-18th century. Before that, the barrier was religious belief, and afterward, the obstacle was colonialism.

So, what is the benefit for us, Arabic readers, of translating Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s text? The benefit for us is to engage in a specific intellectual exercise that helps us understand Rousseau’s book and similar Islamic writings.

Here, Rousseau outlines for himself a simple, clear, and sincere creed that reconciles reason and emotion, guaranteeing tranquility for the individual and unity and stability for society.
