Abu al-Atahiyah, whose full name was Ismail ibn al-Qasim ibn Suwaid ibn Kaysan, was an Abbasid poet whose kunya (patronymic) was Abu Ishaq. He became famous for his nickname “Abu al-Atahiyah,” which is said to have originated from a comment made by Caliph al-Mahdi about his effeminate and affected mannerisms. It is reported that in his youth, Abu al-Atahiyah associated with the caliphs and carried the belongings of effeminate men, exhibiting a tendency towards femininity and gentleness.
He was renowned for his beauty and literary talent, and he used to wander through Kufa carrying jars of vegetables. However, his poetic soul led him to dedicate himself to poetry, abandoning this profession, and he gained widespread fame in the fields of poetry and literature. Abu al-Atahiyah is considered one of the leading poets of his time, and his collected poems are a precious literary legacy in the Arab heritage.
