Description

The story unfolds with a rich narrative—full of intricate details, branching subplots, and far-reaching implications—creating a vivid, precise portrait of a state in its final stages of disintegration, where the individuals and entities linked to it mirror that very collapse. As signs of weakness begin to plague the Sultanate of Rum Seljuks, two Anatolian Turkish princes dare to demand that a Seljuk prince return a portion of his territory to them; the land had once belonged to their family before the Seljuk state expanded westward from eastern Iran into Anatolia. The Seljuk prince considers their request, finding it not unreasonable. He writes to them, expressing a willingness to resolve the matter peacefully and a desire to consult his court nobles and wise advisors.

The prince broaches the subject of this correspondence—and his inclination to cede the tract of land in the eastern part of his emirate (situated between Aleppo and the Crusader Principality of Antioch)—with his court nobles and advisors. He is met with fierce opposition from his wife, Turkan, and his eldest son, Kamyar. A deep rift emerges between his own desire to settle the issue with the two Turkish princes—driven by his awareness of the Seljuks’ waning power—and his wife and son’s insistence on refusing to compromise.
