Put the mattress, Jawdar, in front of Mount Arous and gently turn me so that I may gaze at it. I want to carry its image in my mind to the other world. I don’t know if I will ever see it again…
The joy of seeing is all I have left. I feel nothing, neither warmth nor cold. Neither sadness nor joy, neither regret nor hope. I see you burdening me with your blanket. This blanket is all the same, Jawdar. I realize that the cold still lingers over Cordoba, despite the tree buds, the chirping of the birds, and the sun’s brightness… It is spring, the spring of Cordoba, but I feel nothing.
What I fear is that the feeling hidden within me is the autumn of Andalusia…
I do not fear my autumn, Jawdar, for tomorrow I will meet God and submit to Him.
My Lord, I have borne the trust and have done my best to fulfill it, so do not hold me accountable, my Lord, for what I cannot bear. What I fear is the fading of this glow of Andalusia’s light, which, God willing, I struggled to preserve.
